4 Tips for Seniors Traveling in Summer

Traveling in the summer is the perfect opportunity for seniors to enjoy their golden years. The weather is warm, people are in a good mood, and there are plenty of opportunities to create precious memories. 

However, traveling in summer comes with its own unique set of challenges. Not only are there more tourists in summer, which means more crowds, but you also risk hotter weather. So, if you’re going on a trip this summer and you’re over the age of 70, here are some essential tips to ensure you have a safe and comfortable trip.

Stay Hydrated

It can’t be stressed how important it is to stay hydrated during the warm season. Seniors are at higher risk for dehydration, which means you must sip water regularly throughout the day. Dehydration isn’t just uncomfortable, but it can lead to fatigue, and even fainting. 

It helps to carry a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day, and sip occasionally. Gulping all in one go may make you feel full, especially in a hot environment. You should also avoid excessive caffeinated drinks and alcohol, as they could contribute to dehydration. Remember, balance is key, so be careful with what you drink.

Prioritize Comfort

Comfort is everything when it comes to ensuring you have a great trip. For example, seniors who have mobility issues need to make sure that they pack everything they need to ensure the maximum amount of comfort possible. That means comfortable shoes, breathable clothing for the warm weather, and of course any accessories you need like a cane.

Try to get a direct flight if you can, and avoid excessive layovers.  Sometimes connecting flights may be a more attractive price, however, they’re more exhausting, and can detract from the overall experience of your trip. The more you can focus on how to make your trip as comfortable as possible, the more memorable the overall experience will be.

Create a Schedule

Remember, planning is everything when it comes to a successful trip. Try to schedule ahead of time as much as possible. Plan on what days you plan on doing which activities, and avoid planning things at peak hours. In other words, you might not want to do a tour of Rome at 2:00 PM in August. Try to schedule outside activities in the mornings or evenings to ensure the most comfortable temperature possible.

The last thing you want is to experience heat stroke on your trip and wind up in the hospital.  A little planning goes a long way during the summer months.

Many tourist attractions as well as transportation services will offer you a discount making your trip even more affordable.  Don’t hesitate to ask your airline and hotel if they offer any special discounts for their senior guests.
