    Offscreen Magazine

We picked up Issue 12 of Offscreen magazine on our recent trip to Berlin’s Do You Read Me?! and spent a couple of mornings reading it from cover to cover, enjoying every sentence.

As you can read on the magazine’s website, “Offscreen is a high-quality print periodical with an in-depth look at the life and work of people that use the internet to be creative and build successful businesses.”

The print quality and design are beautiful but what makes this magazine extra special is its content. There are many great features and articles in this issue but we especially enjoyed reading the interviews with Matt ‘Mills’ Miller from ustwo (digital studio behind the Monument Valley game) and Jason Fried, the Co-founder of Basecamp, in which we can find out more about their humble beginnings starting their own companies.

We love the idea of the magazine showcasing the human side of digital and encouraging its readers to put their laptops and phones down, taking a break and slowing down. Kai Brach, its founder, deserves a round of applause for creating this very unique publication.

  • Original Unverpackt

    Original Unverpackt

Opened in 2014, Original Unverpackt (Originally Unpacked) is a Berlin-based small supermarket selling products without packaging. Founders Milena Glimbovski and Sara Wold encourage shoppers to bring their own bags and containers in which the purchased products can be stored.

The supermarket is a response to the “Zero Waste” movement that looks for alternatives to the classic consumer options – unnecessary waste is avoided and unavoidable waste is recycled.  Original Unverpackt is one of the many businesses joining this movement globally and encouraging sustainable behaviour among shoppers.

  • Act

    Act

Act is an espadrilles and accessories brand based between Mallorca and Berlin founded by Isabel Rotger and Alex Drobovolny in 2013. After working in communication for several fashion companies, Isabel moved to Berlin and met Alex, CEO of Label Agent. They came up with the idea of Act on a Friday afternoon and the week after, they were already looking for manufacturers for their first collection.

Act is born out of the Mediterranean and each of the brand’s collections is designed around a concept of an everyday, spontaneous act, using series instead of seasons. In 2014, Act launched their first series “Walking” and in 2015 the brand has focused on “Living Room” as the topic for their collection. Act’s great attention to detail not only shows on their products, hand-made in Spain using 100% natural leather and suede, but on the campaigns for their series and the design of their website and promotional materials.

Isabel and Alex have just embarked on their next adventure and have started collaborating on the design of their first sunglasses collection and a line of sweaters that will see the light later this year.

How did you get interested in photography and art direction?

A few years ago I studied Advertising in Barcelona. We had a great offer of subjects related to image, graphic design and video. Art Direction was a field I learned thoroughly during the four years of the degree. Photography was certainly basic. Still, it was significantly revealing for me, because it was my first contact with this art.

What made you move to Berlin? How does the city inspire your work?

A friend of mine was considering moving here for a while. I dreamed of London, but that option was overpriced. In her idea, instead, I perceived an opportunity to get to know another language and culture. I had never been here before, in fact I couldn’t speak a word of German. Despite that, it felt like the best choice. And when I look back, I don’t regret it at all.

For someone coming from Barcelona, Berlin can be different in every way. Not only because of its weather, but also the streets, the buildings, the people… This city has another mood. I’m sure it has inspired my work. Maybe not directly, but in a subtle way. A year ago I got accepted in a photography school and that has clearly been a huge input.

What other things do you draw inspiration from?

Mostly people, magazines and the internet.

Please tell us about some of your favourite projects you’ve worked on.

Personal projects are the ones that truly fulfil me. Soft Skin was the first of them and probably still my favourite one.

Are you working on any new project at the moment?

Many, specially since I recently began to freelance full-time. There are some inspiring shootings coming soon, both in Berlin and Barcelona. Let’s see… I’m also very excited about a new Tumblr I created called impressionsdujour.

    What are your future plans?

Keep on learning every day and continue working hard.

  • Pull&Bear: The Berliners

To celebrate the opening of their first Berlin store, Pull & Bear created a series of videos with local characters that show us their particular vision of the city while at the same time representing some of the values of the brand such as art, music and sport.

The first video features Max von Senger, an owner of Standert, a shop selling three of our favourite things – coffee, bikes and home-made popsicles. Find out more about the project here.
