    designjunction 2014

designjunction is a design trade show presenting the very best in product, lighting, furniture and graphic design from around the world. Every show is full of beautifully crafted objects featured against the stunning industrial backdrops of the The Old Sorting Office in London. It’s been said that designjunction has created the perfect balance between creative and commercial, “offering a much-needed alternative to the traditional trade show”.

designjunction is also a great place to discover new design talent and up and coming labels. This year, multi-award winning designer Jim Rokos introduced a line of sculptural objects including bowls and vases and Rhian Malin presented a collection of tactile vessels created by inviting participants to gently squash a freshly thrown porcelain vessel to the shape of their hands, making each of them completely unique. Design studio Daniel Emma showed Mish Mash, their first chair handmade in Adelaide by a local craftsman and one of our favourites was new jewellery, prints, stationary and product design brand Tom Pigeon.

  • A Scandinavian Midsummer

    A Scandinavian Midsummer

Last Tuesday we attended the press preview of A Scandinavian Midsummer, a pop-up exhibition and cafe organised by designjunction before their event at London Design Festival in September.

Running until Sunday 29th June, designjunction have transformed Habitat’s Platform gallery on King’s Road into an impressive Scandinavian midsummer experience, showcasing the latest products from leading Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian brands.

If you’re visiting the gallery in June you’ll be able to enjoy great artisan coffee and Scandinavian delicacies provided by Skandel, as well as flower arranging workshops organised by Flor Unikon every Saturday of the month.

Thanks to our London-based contributor Jess Maddock for attending and documenting the event.

  • Anglepoise + Paul Smith

    Anglepoise + Paul Smith

Last Tuesday we attended the launch of the collaboration between iconic British design companies Anglepoise and Paul Smith. Taking place during Clerkenwell Design Week, this exciting new product was presented along two new lamp ranges, the Type 75 Maxi Collection and the Original 1227 Brass Collection.

The Anglepoise + Paul Smith is a stunning new interpretation of the iconic Type 75 table lamp, where all the pieces of this original model designed by Sir Kenneth Grange are reinterpreted in a complimentary combination of colours.

The Anglepoise + Paul Smith will be available to pre-order on both the Anglepoise and Paul Smith websites mid-August and in Paul Smith shops and selected retailers from 13th September 2014.

Thanks to our newest contributor Jess Maddock for attending and documenting the event.

  • EIFF: Day 3

    EIFF: Day 3

We just came back from the Symposium, a day of talks and moderated panel discussions organised as a part of the Edinburgh International Fashion Festival. Discussions with Georgina Goodman (shoe designer), Bella Freud (designer and film maker), Amanda Harlech (creative consultant for brands including Chanel), David Lindsay (Net a Porter and Farfetch), Paula Goldstein (Digital Editor of Purple.fr) and others were moderated by Jackie McGlone, an interviewer and feature writer for newspapers and magazines, specialising in arts, culture and design.

Georgina Goodman, who was mentored by Manolo Blahnik at the Royal College of Art, mentioned how strange designs will bring a designer a lot of publicity, but they don’t sell. The trick is in balancing the more commercial work with designs that can’t be often worn.

Bella Freud talked about her numerous collaborations, saying that they can be very interesting, stimulating but also problematic at times.

An important point was also made by Paula Goldstein in the final talk today, when she mentioned that fashion world is obsessed with the instant sharing, fashion editors are often fixated with taking a perfect Instagram picture, and they are not able to fully enjoy the magic of a fashion show and fully capture its mood, and all the details of the designs.

The Edinburgh International Fashion Festival continues until the 28th of July.
