  • Decorating for family living

Maintaining a beautiful house while bringing up children can feel like an overwhelming challenge. Children are wonderful, but you learn to accept that things will be broken and there’ll be unavoidable mess here and there. You want to have a pristine house, but it’s important that everyone in the family feels comfortable there. Below, we explore how you can still decorate your house in a pretty way without worrying about the children accidentally creating a mess.

    Storage and clutter

Thinking outside the box with storage space can help you carry out a speedy tidy up before guests arrive. You can create elegant storage space by hanging baskets up on the walls to act as decorative shelves. Plus you can include draws subtly behind your sofa to combine your sitting and storage areas. Go for a kid-friendly coffee table too – one that you won’t worry about damage to, without sharp edges.

    Walls

Invest in the right paint to deal with what your kids throw at you: from smudges, drawings to other marks on the walls. Kitchen paint is grease proof, wipeable and durable enough to cope with most things your little ones can offer. Meanwhile, bathroom paint can keep mould and moisture away from your bathroom walls, making it safe for everyone.

    Flooring

Choose your type of floor carefully when considering dealing with mess. Wooden floors can look classy and they’re easier to keep clean than carpeted floors. However, your children will play anywhere, and you need to make sure it’s safe. A large rug can help ensure that your children have something soft to play on above the wooden floor. Plus they can add a cosy dimension to your room, with an endless array of styles and choices to go for.

    Create space for everyone

Your living room needs to work for everyone and offer the whole family a chance to relax. Perhaps go for a large corner sofa, alongside some other small perches to rest on. These could be bean bags, ottomans and other little chairs so that everyone has somewhere to chill out. With a sofa bed in the living room you can also have a snuggly night in, by watching a movie together as everyone stretches out in the bed.

It can be difficult to combine comfort with kid-friendly, but by following the above advice you can decorate your house for everyone.

  • Green Transportation: Are Electric Cars Really a Smart Choice for the Environment?

The automotive industry is in the midst of a fairly seismic transformation. You might have seen evidence of it on your street: charging stations are starting to appear on driveways, and number-plates are beginning to feature those little green squares which indicate an electric vehicle (or EV).

Among the major benefits of electric cars is that they don’t pollute the environment to anywhere near the same extent. But is the hype around this solution really justified? Let’s examine the trend more closely.

    What’s an EV?

An EV is any vehicle that’s powered entirely through an onboard battery. This is much bigger than the battery that’s attached to the starter motor of an internal combustion vehicle. Electric Vehicles are distinct from hybrid ones, which employ a combination of internal-combustion and electric locomotion.

    Benefits of an EV

We’ve already mentioned the environmental upside to an electric vehicle. Since you’re not burning any oil in the vehicle itself, you don’t need to worry about exhaust fumes spilling out of the back and messing up the ecosystem, and raising global temperatures. Of course, electric vehicles need to get their energy from somewhere, and if that somewhere is a fossil-fuel burning power plant, then there’s still reason to be sceptical.

With that said, the general efficiency of an EV puts it at an advantage, even when this is the case. The Volkswagen Up, for example, can cover more than 5 miles on a single kwh. As the efficiency of batteries increases over time, we should expect to see this gap widen. Moreover, the energy cost of manufacturing a given battery should lessen over time as economies of scale begin to kick in.

You don’t need to sacrifice drivability for the sake of an electric vehicle, with just about every major manufacturer having an electric vehicle of some description to offer.

    Should You go Electric?

For most motorists, the electric question is one of when rather than if. Batteries are almost certain to get more efficient over time, and innovations like solid-state batteries are set to push things forward even further in the future.

Greater production capacity, similarly, is sure to push down the price of driving electric, just as the opposite effect takes hold of the internal-combustion market. With fewer viable petrol stations around, and more charging stations, there will come a point when only classic cars, and those with special historical and sentimental value, are fuelled with traditional petrol and diesel. With the government already having announced plans to ban the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles in the future, it’s likely that the industry will head in that direction sooner rather than later.

  • 7 Tips for Getting Great Sleep Consistently

When you’re sleep-deprived, it can get in the way of many things, including work. Getting great sleep requires doing a few things right and avoiding actions that will make restful sleep harder to come by. Here are seven tips for getting consistent, high-quality sleep.

    Image via Unsplash

    1. Exercise After the Workday

Exercising is obviously healthy, but it is particularly beneficial to getting good sleep.

It can relieve tension in the body, especially if you’re an office worker who is mostly sedentary sitting at the PC for many working hours.

Be sure not to overdo exercise by exerting yourself too much. This can re-energize you and keep you awake. Following on from that point, avoid exercising too late in the evening. It won’t allow your body to slow down enough before hitting the hay.

    2. Avoid Eating or Drinking Too Much

Overeating or consuming a heavy meal late in the evening causes your body to work harder to begin the digestive process. It can also lead to a more interrupted sleep pattern due to waking up to use the bathroom halfway through the night.

Eating lighter, not consuming too many liquids, and doing so earlier in the evening gives your body the chance to complete its necessary processes sooner. As such, you’re less likely to need a bathroom break at 3 AM.

    3. A Sleep Drink May Help

Missing out on essential minerals can cause trouble with recovery and sleep.

Taking a sleep drink shortly before bedtime that includes essential minerals can be restorative both to the mind and body. The use of L-Theanine in this type of drink is useful because it can encourage your mind to slow its pace, so restful sleep is easier to obtain.

    4. Cut Back on Smoking

Smokers often use nicotine for stress relief. However, it’s also a stimulant too. Because of this, it’s best to abstain for several hours before going to bed to avoid remaining too awake to get a good night’s rest.

    5. Stop Drinking Coffee or Soft Drinks Earlier

Coffee is a stimulant because the caffeine in it will keep you awake. It has a half-life of several hours, so the effect is longer lasting than you might realize. Make it a rule to avoid consuming coffee in the evenings, so the effect of the caffeine has time to dissipate before bedtime.

Soft drinks are also a concern too. They usually include a certain amount of caffeine in them – less than coffee – which might not be immediately obvious.

    6. Reduce Noises

A noisy household or external sounds can keep you awake or prevent a deep REM sleep.

Use noise dampening curtains to reduce external sounds. Also, let anyone in the household know when you’re going to bed, so people can try to be quieter after that time. As a last resort, earplugs can reduce any remaining sounds like creaking floorboards.

Ensure your bedroom is dark enough. Any light source when trying to sleep well can be a distraction for the brain.

    7. Listen to a Relaxing Soundtrack

Winding down is important to get the body ready for a long period of sleep.

Listening to nature soundtracks such as leaves rustling, rainstorm recordings, or melodic easy listening recordings are effective in calming the mind. YouTube and YouTube Music have many of them.

Using an app with a prerecorded selection of relaxing audio is useful too – Calm Radio and Tinnitus Calmer are particularly good.

Lastly, sticking to a set sleep pattern is beneficial to get the body used to sleep at a consistent time every night. It even helps on weekends if you can manage it too.

It may not seem that football matches are suitable for families, yet it is highly popular. Regardless if you are not a football fanatic, it is a great family day out filled with an exciting atmosphere. This article will give you all the relevant information you need when visiting a football game as a family in London.

    Premier League Teams:

The 6 London football teams that play in the Premier League are:

    • Chelsea – They play at Stamford Bridge in Fulham, London. They are probably one of the well known clubs in London, as they have 6 league titles. Their current manager is Frank Lampard, who is argued as one of the Chelsea’s best players of all time. The stadium holds over 40,000 seats.
    • Tottenham Hotspur– Or commonly known as Spurs moved from White Hart Lane to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, in Tottenham, North London. It is the largest stadium in London and third largest in England, as it has the capacity to seat over 62,000.
    • Arsenal – Play in the Emirates Stadium in Islington, North London. The football club’s  nickname is also called ‘The Gunners’. It is accessible from the Piccadilly line. The stadium holds over 60,000 seats.
    • West Ham United – Play in London Stadium which is based in Stratford, East London. The stadium seats over 60,000 seats. They are known for selling tickets for families at affordable prices.
    • Crystal Palace F.C. – Are based in Selhurst, South London. This stadium is smaller compared to other football teams in the premier league with only holding the capacity of just over 25,000. To get to Selhurst Park it requires the train from either Victoria or London Bridge.
    • Fulham F.C. – Play at Craven Cottage, with the stadium being able to seat over 25,000. They are London’s oldest professional football club. At the end of 2019/2020 football season, Fulham were promoted to the Premier league, after being relegated in 2018/2019.

Is it safe to bring children to a football match?

Over the years, football stadiums have imposed stricter rules regarding drinking during games, this is to reduce drunken conflict and to protect the welfare of staff and spectators. With this it has increased the safeness of bringing children to a football match. Football clubs have also introduced family sections which are dedicated to children, with most adults not being able to sit there unless accompanied by a child. Most football clubs also have children entertainment in that area to create an unforgettable family experience. Although there is not an age restriction on football stadiums, most stadiums do not have pram storage facilities and there are restrictions on bag size for safety reasons.

Whilst there are stewards throughout the stadium and a family zone, be prepared to hear adult language with adults shouting and chanting. It is also worth noting, that if you have younger children and have no preference on matches, you should go to a smaller game and avoid the big games like derby days (Arsenal vs Tottenham) as rivalry can be intense and can become overwhelming for children.

    Plan for Weather Changes

As it is England, the weather is constantly changing and is unpredictable. It is important to prepare for all seasons when taking your children to a football match. Although the majority of stadiums are semi-covered and spectators are sheltered from the rain, it is cold to stand and watch, especially during the winter periods. It is important to make sure your children are layered up to keep them warm during the game as temperatures at night drop.

    Plan Ahead Before Traveling:

Although the London transport system is great and you can get across London on the underground or railway, it is important to make sure you plan ahead especially when going to a match. Match days can make some stations extremely busy, so it is important to make sure you give you and your family plenty of time to get to the stadium. It might be worth going earlier to beat football traffic and to allow your children to feel safe. With big crowds on the transport, it can be easy to lose people, especially little ones, so make sure they stick with you and not wander off.

In addition, there is always maintenance work throughout London, so make sure you give your family plenty of time for travelling to the match. It does not matter if you are extremely early at the stadium as there is always an atmosphere and food truck fenders. You can even take your family into the official merchandise store and get them a football kit.

How to purchase tickets for the games

Unfortunately, the only way you can purchase direct tickets for a premier league match is from the football club through becoming a member. Membership prices vary depending on the club, but usually are starting from £35-£50 depending on the membership. Memberships would need to be linked in order to connect them when purchasing tickets and to make sure you and your family are sat together.

Once you have the membership, tickets for that game will be released early morning and with big games it can be extremely difficult to purchase tickets as they sell out within minutes. If you plan to only visit a London football match as a family a couple of times, a membership may not be worth it for your family.

The quickest way of comparing ticket prices for the English Premier League is via recommended website Seat-Compare.com.

If you plan to visit one game, there are package deals available through each club, where you and your family can purchase hospitality, which includes food and beverages, however, prices for hospitality are not cheap and can set you back at least a few hundred pounds.

Some hotels do overnight stay packages with tickets. For example the Millennium and Copthorne hotels in London offer an overnight stay with breakfast included with a ticket to watch Chelsea football club play at Stamford Bridge. In addition you also receive a match day programme, team sheet line up and a Chelsea Football Club gift. There are no prices available and do vary depending on the game.
