  • 5 Things to know before Starting a Handyman Business in the UK

Almost by definition, handymen (and handywomen) are valuable people to have around. They have a diverse skillset which means they can be called upon in a range of circumstances. If you build a reputation, then you can rely on the business of just a handful of clients.

Before you make a start working as a handyman, however, there are a few things worth bearing in mind.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a tradesperson with expertise in a broad range of areas. They don’t tend to charge as much as a specialist for the same job, and they might not have the qualifications necessary to legally carry out more complex problems. But most jobs don’t require specialist expertise, and in these cases, a handyman can be enormously useful.

How much does a handyman earn?

A handyman can expect to pick up around 30k per annum. This varies considerably, depending on your level of experience, and the location you’re working in. London-based handymen can expect to earn more than their counterparts in the countryside.

Do I need to be qualified?

There’s no legal requirement that people advertising themselves as handymen undergo any formal training. Unless you’re doing a specific task, like rewiring a house or rerouting a gas pipe, you’re not compelled by law to undergo any particular training.

With that said, you might be able to earn more as a handyman by undergoing training in a few particular niches. This will improve the quality of your work, allow you to more easily collaborate with other tradespeople, and get clients coming back for more.

    Cost

When formulating your business plan, you should be sure that you’ve accounted for all of the costs you’ll need to deal with. These include transport and equipment. To work as a handyman, you’ll need a varied toolkit, including essential items like hammers, drills, screwdrivers and the like. Higher quality tools, like Milwaukee drill drivers, will ensure that you’re able to work to a higher standard, and more efficiently, too. They’ll also mean that you don’t spend more on replacements.

    Insurance

When you work as a handyman, you’re exposed to certain kinds of financial risk. You can seek to minimise some of these by implementing the right working practices. If you wear appropriate protective equipment, for example, then you’re less likely to be forced out of work by an injury.

Insurance will offer you cover against financial damage. You should look to cover not only yourself, but your liability to the public. You don’t want to find that you’re not covered in the event that you should be involved in an accident, and a member of the public be harmed as a consequence.

Set up your own music venue

Local musicians are always looking for new places to perform. Setting up a local music venue could be a way of supporting local music talent while making money. The venue could double up as a bar or a restaurant – this could be your main source of income so that you’re not having to charge huge amounts for tickets. In order to create a successful music venue, you may want to invest in features such as professional speaker systems and advanced acoustic modelling. You’ll also need to do a lot of marketing to keep people coming in.

    Sell old records

You could also make money selling vintage vinyl. This could be via a market stall, a physical store or an online store. On top of having a good knowledge of music, you’ll need to know how to value vinyl. Some vinyl stores also operate as cafes, providing an extra source of income.

    Get into music promotion/PR

Another entrepreneurial idea could be to get into music promotion or PR. Musicians need help finding gigs and attracting crowds, which music promoters can help with. Music PR meanwhile involves helping musicians to develop a media presence by approaching radio stations, publications and blogs. A passion for music and understanding of the industry may be all that’s necessary to start up your own business (although a marketing background can help).

    Start a music blog

Many people start music blogs as a hobby, but there is money to be made from music blogging. Musicians are often keen to get reviews of their music and are sometimes willing to pay bloggers to write reviews. There’s also the option of other sponsored posts. On top of this, if your music blog gets successful, you could also make some money through ad revenue. This can be a great money-making scheme for those with a passion for writing. Growing a profitable music blog can take time and may work better as a side hustle for some people.

    Become a music teacher

If you can sing or play an instrument, you could consider the option of becoming a music teacher. People are always looking to take up instruments or improve their singing – you could offer private tuition or you could start a class. Being able to perform to a proficient level will help your credibility, but you don’t have to be a pro to teach others.

This isn’t something that should go uncelebrated, and while it’s good to be looking forward and working on the next step, you also need to celebrate your achievements along the way and give yourself a pat on the back. Enjoy yourself, kick back and relax, treat yourself and then get back to the hard work again.

    Use your platform for good

Now that you have a platform – a little corner of the internet, that is yours, use it for a good cause. Upgrading equipment, investing in a cheap VPS so that your readers have a better experience on your site or learning about how to take your blog to the next step are all beneficial ways to spend your money and put back into your business.

    Create a maintenance plan

Even if you’re not ready to look at the next step just yet, then it’s important that you create a maintenance plan to keep your blog going at the level it is now.

    Diversify

What else can you do now? Could you teach other people how to have a successful blog? Could you host talks and workshops that people will pay for? Is there anything relating to your blog and what you talk about that you could sell? For example, if your blog focuses on mental health, could you sell bags and mugs with positive messages on? Could you write a book? Could you start vlogging? There are plenty of options which complement blogs, and having a successful blog makes them a lot easier to do.
